Why is media education important?

Posted on February 23, 2007. Filed under: media literacy |

In our world today we are bombarded with many information. We grow wherein information is also increasing. Where does this information come from? Information comes from different kinds of media such as: radio, television, newspaper, Internet, and others. These kinds of media are also part of our world. They are fast in development. They give information in the message, they serve as the vehicle of information. They deliver messages in every part of the world.  They keep us updated and informative in their messages but not everybody receives the same messages or information.  There are two kinds of media the mass media and the non-mass media. Mass media is composed of many messages to many people or one message to many people e.g. the president declared the state of emergency and she done it in using media and was receives by those people on that certain country. He will use media, a television for instance or a newspaper for him to give the information to the people or for example when the principal wrote a memorandum and address to the entire student that on November 1 will be a holiday. While a non-mass media is an information given to a certain man e.g. the principal will recommend this so-and-so to a certain company for a job.

We must consider also that there is a difference between information and knowledge. Information resides on a message and this message makes a person to interpret while knowledge resides on a person’s mind and the message is already interpreted.

When we are with much information of those messages we always prefer to make our self in the mood of automaticity. What is this automaticity? Automaticity is a mindless act wherein we work without any consciousness coming from us. For example when we start to practice how to drive first is that we are too conscious what should be the first thing to do, how should we make this car run or how to manipulate it, where is the position of our hand, feet and others. Upon long months of practice we do not care now where is the position of our hand, what should we do or we are not aware of we what we are doing and on that we are in the mood of automaticity.

Sometimes when we are exposing into different messages our being in the mode of automaticity can program our trigger and sometimes when we are not conscious it call-up at our attention. For when we are on the study hall studying our lesson while there is playing music the music change title constantly and suddenly your favorite music was played and your attention in studying was disturb by you trigger. We expose ourselves to different messages and we don’t care on them but if your trigger or your favorite music played your attention was trigger by that song. When we go to a supermarket and there are lot of items on it we found ourselves hard to read each item to know their content so we prefer to be in our automatic mood. We prefer to look for those whom we watch on television that they already shown the content of their item. But we are not aware that the media is trapping us.

To have media education can wake up our mind to differentiate what is real from what is unreal. Here we know how to over come our automaticity and even we are covered us by our culture, we psychologically eliminate our culture in our self to avoid aoutomaticity and we always program our trigger.
